Rainbow Forge children are researching food during WW1

Y5s in role in WW1
Rainbow Forge Community Event

Dr Julie Moore from the University of Hertfordshire led work with the year five class using photographs and images from WW1. She later attended the community event and chatted with community members.

The community event featured WW1 themed cake and other foods. These proved very popular with the visitors. There was an exhibition of their work on the project so far, including cookbooks the children had compiled using historical recipes..

A local expert brought in objects from the First World War for display.
Rainbow Forge Primary School children have identified the following questions they would like the research to explore -

Food Organisations and Getting Food
  • How did they organise food?
  • What shops were there on the high street?
  • How did they get food?
  • Who made the food?
  • How did they transport food?
  • Did people have to wait for food?
  • How long did people have to wait for food?
  • Did people fight over food?
  • Did food go mouldy?
  • How was food sharing organised?
What People Ate and Drank
  • How did they make bread?
  • Were people able to eat whatever they wanted?
  • Did they get treats?
  • What did they drink?
  • Was bread the most popular food source?
  • What food products were there and how were they made?
  • Did they have fizzy drinks?
  • Was food cheaper or more expensive (in real terms) than food today?
  • Did children eat more than adults?
Breaking the Rules
  • Who broke the rules about food?
  • How were the rules broken?
  • Did people agree with and / or like the rules?
  • How many people broke the rules?
  • Who invented the rules?
  • What were the rules?
 Shortages and Rationing
  • How much were the rations?
  • How long did rationing last?
  • What impact did rationing have on people?
  • Did rationing save people money?
  • Who had the ration books?
  • What stopped food from getting to people?
