Armley Mills World War 1 Classroom
On a freezing November day the year fives were terrified by the Armley Mills World War I classroom in which they were constantly told off; the boys were treated better than the girls; and one young man had to experience the backboard.
“I’m really glad schools aren’t like that now.” said Leighton Higginbotham pictured below writing a letter to a soldier at the front using pen and ink.
Woodthorpe Primary School
Woodthorpe Primary School took part in the project as part of their Wargames topic and with the celebration performance in 2018.
With great sensitivity they explored the story of the Tomlinsons. This family lived in Mastin Moor. In 1913, the father died at 51. Mrs Tomlinson then went on to lose three of her five sons at the Front. The Woodthorpe year fives and sixes really understood the traumatic impact this would have had for the mother, brothers and sisters left at home.

Woodthorpe School Logbook and Admissions Record
Woodthorpe School found their logbook and admissions records from the time. The children and community group are looking forward to finding out further stories from it in the coming months.
“There is a real thrill the children get from handling documents from a hundred years ago.” says Kerry Saunders the Norbriggs Year five teacher.
From these documents the project identified the class of 1918/19 at Woodthorpe Primary School. There were also links with the modern community at Norbriggs Primary School.
You can read all about this in the book produced by the project below
